Humic Acid and Humate

Humus acid, Hy-matomelanic acid, and fulvic acid are collectively referred to as humic acid. Among them, fulvic acid has the smallest molecular size. These three types of humic acids have different solubilities in different solvents and can be separated accordingly. Humus acid is only soluble in alkali, hy-matomelanic acid is soluble in alkali as well as polar solvents such as acetone and ethanol, and fulvic acid is soluble not only in alkali, acetone, ethanol, and other organic solvents, but also in dilute acids and water. It can be seen that the smaller the molecular weight of fulvic acid, the better its solubility.

Humic acids are widely used in agriculture. However, humic acids themselves are difficult to dissolve in water. If they are prepared in the form of humate salts, not only can their solubility be increased, but also elements necessary for plant growth can be introduced, such as potassium humate, which can introduce K. Only a small amount of humate salt is needed, and it dissolves in water to form a brown-black liquid. As the amount of humate salt added increases, the color will deepen continuously, and the viscosity of the liquid will also increase continuously, but no crystallization will occur, and finally, it will become a gel-like viscous state. It can be said that humate salts have no specific solubility and can be miscible with water.

The solubility of humate salts in practical applications has a specific parameter called the anti-hard water ability. Generally, under the premise of having the structural characteristics of humic acid, the smaller the molecular weight of humic acid, the stronger the anti-hard water ability, and the stronger the anti-hard water ability of humate salt products, the better the product effect. Humate salts with weak anti-hard water ability may cause flocculation during use, thereby affecting their application.

The anti-hard water ability of potassium humate is directly related to the raw coal. The more hydrophilic groups in the raw coal, the better the anti-hard water ability of the extracted potassium humate; the smaller the molecular size of the humic acid extracted from the raw coal, the better the anti-hard water ability.
